The CareersMV session cookie
First-party, meaning only this site can set or read it. It carries a few things from one page to the next. Your sign-in is not in it: that is Clerk’s job (below).
- Name
__careersmv- Set by
- CareersMV, this site only
- Lifetime
- 30 days from its last change
- Protection
- HttpOnly, so scripts on the page cannot read it. Signed, so the server can tell if it was changed. SameSite=Lax, and Secure on the live site, so it only travels over HTTPS.
One more first-party cookie is set only for CareersMV admins: careersmv-employer-view remembers which employer’s dashboard an admin is looking at, for 8 hours.
What it holds
- one-off notices, such as the confirmation after you do something, removed as soon as they are shown;
- jobs you saved while signed out, when your browser runs without scripts (otherwise they stay on the device, see below);
- jobs whose apply link or email you opened, so the job page can say you applied;
- the job you are writing in Post a job, until you publish it.
It is signed rather than encrypted, so anyone with access to your browser could read it. Keep secrets out of listing drafts.
The theme cookie
Holds one word, light, dark or system, so pages are drawn in the colours you chose before anything else loads. It is set when you use the theme switch.

careersmv-theme- Set by
- CareersMV, this site only
- Lifetime
- 365 days
- Readable by the page
- Yes, so the switch can change it straight away
The interest cookie
Remembers the kinds of jobs you open, so CareersMV can recommend similar ones without an account. When you open a job, it adds one to each of the job’s topics: its role, department, category and island. After 3 jobs on one topic, a job page may offer an alert for it.
- Name
cmv_interest- Set by
- CareersMV, this site only, when you open a job
- Lifetime
- 90 days from the last job you opened
- Holds
- Up to 12 topic codes with a count, such as
occupation:chef*3. No job ids, searches or anything about you. - Readable by the page
- Yes, so it can be updated as you browse
Sign-in cookies from Clerk
Signing in to CareersMV is run by Clerk. Clerk’s script runs on every page to tell whether you are signed in, and sets these cookies on this site:
- __session
- A short-lived token that proves you are signed in. Clerk renews it every minute or so while a page is open.
- __client_uat
- When your sign-in last changed, so the server knows whether to read the token. It is set to 0 when you are signed out.
Clerk may also keep cookies on its own sign-in domain. Clerk’s privacy policy describes them.
Stripe, when you pay
Employers pay on CareersMV through Stripe. While you check out, Stripe’s payment form loads from Stripe and sets Stripe’s own cookies, used for the payment and to prevent fraud. Stripe’s privacy policy has the details.
Saved jobs on your device
Not a cookie, but close: jobs you save while signed out are kept in your browser’s local storage. They are not sent with each request. When you sign in they move to your account.
When they are set
Clerk’s script sets its cookies on your first visit, to tell whether you are signed in. Searching sets no CareersMV cookie; opening a job sets the interest cookie. The session cookie is created the first time there is something to remember, such as a notice after an action or a job you start writing, and the theme cookie when you use the theme switch. Stripe’s cookies are set only while you pay.
How to clear them
- Sign out from your account to end your Clerk session.
- Or delete this site’s cookies and site data in your browser, usually under privacy in its settings. That also clears saves on the device.
What this site does not use
No advertising cookies, and no analytics or tracking scripts on these pages. CareersMV counts how often each job is shown in a list on the server, as one number per job per day, without a cookie and without recording who saw it. The typefaces are served by this site. Share buttons are plain links: nothing is sent to X, Telegram or WhatsApp unless you click one. The privacy policy covers how we handle personal information.
