Housekeeping careers in Maldives resorts run from room or villa attendant to executive housekeeper. Some room attendant jobs are advertised as entry level, and from December 2030 quotas for foreign housekeeping managers are due to end.

1,599 vacancies are open in the Maldives on CareersMV as of 7 Oct 2026: 1,096 at 123 resorts and 398 in government and the public sector.

What housekeeping does at a Maldives resort

Resort housekeeping keeps the villas, public areas, gardens and linen in order. A room or villa attendant cleans and sets up a set of villas each day to the resort's standards. The job includes restocking amenities and preparing the villa for the evening.

Public area attendants look after the restaurants, spa, lobby and paths; laundry attendants wash and press linen and uniforms on the island. Because a villa can be a long walk or a buggy ride away, attendants plan their routes and work to set times.

Who works in resort accommodation services

The Bureau of Statistics put 23% of resort jobs in accommodation services in 2022 (Employment in Resorts 2022). Maldivians held 72% of them. The survey does not show housekeeping separately.

The career ladder

The usual housekeeping ladder, from entry level:

  1. Room attendant, villa attendant, public area attendant or laundry attendant
  2. Senior attendant or team leader
  3. Housekeeping supervisor or laundry supervisor
  4. Assistant executive housekeeper
  5. Executive housekeeper (housekeeping manager)
  6. Rooms division manager or director of rooms

Some resorts combine attendant work with guest service; Maldives listings include villa host, and room attendant and villa host as one job. Moving into butler or front office work is another route; see butler careers.

Skills and qualifications resorts ask for

No Maldives rule we checked requires a qualification for housekeeping work. Some room attendant jobs are advertised as entry level.

A villa attendant listing we read in October 2026 asked for:

  • two to three years of experience in a related role
  • excellent written and spoken English
  • calm, adaptable and solution-focused work under pressure
  • good interpersonal skills
  • physical fitness
  • five-star resort experience and other languages, as a plus

Supervisors and above need to plan rosters, train teams, inspect rooms and control linen and amenity stock.

Languages that help

The villa attendant listing we read asked for excellent English. Another language helps if you serve guests directly.

China (14.7%), Russia (12.4%), the UK (9.0%), Germany (7.5%) and Italy (6.8%) sent the most tourists in 2025 (Ministry of Tourism).

Housekeeping manager quotas end in 2030

Housekeeping manager is on the list of posts being reserved for Maldivians under Regulation 2025/R-120. Quotas for foreign housekeeping managers end five years after the regulation took effect on 14 December 2025 (Schedule 2, Article 26). Existing quotas are then cancelled and no new ones issued.

The Department of Foreign Labour's summary lists the same timetable. Room attendant and housekeeping supervisor are not on the list. For Maldivians, the rule makes the path from supervisor to executive housekeeper worth planning for now.

Pay

Resorts rarely advertise pay, so most housekeeping listings leave salary out. The table shows advertised pay where enough listings state it.

Advertised pay, MVR a month

Too few open vacancies advertise pay for these roles right now. See advertised salaries.

The median of open vacancies that advertise pay, with the lowest and highest. USD at the rate of 7 Oct 2026 (Rates By Exchange Rate API). Resorts rarely advertise pay, and service charge, accommodation and meals are not in these figures.

Service charge comes on top of salary. Tourism businesses must charge at least 10% and share it equally among all employees (Employment Act, section 52). That includes staff who contribute indirectly, such as housekeeping.

Most resort staff live on the island: 91% of resort employees lived in their resort in 2022 (Maldives Bureau of Statistics).

Questions people ask

Do I need experience to be a room attendant in a Maldives resort?

Not always. Some room attendant jobs are advertised as entry level, while some villa attendant jobs ask for two to three years of experience. Read each listing.

How much do resort room attendants earn in the Maldives?

Resorts rarely advertise pay, so there is no reliable public figure; the table above shows only advertised pay. Ask about basic salary, service charge, overtime and accommodation before you accept.

Do housekeeping staff get service charge?

Yes. The Employment Act requires tourism businesses to share service charge equally among all employees who contribute to services, directly or indirectly. The employer may keep no more than 1%.

Can foreigners work in housekeeping in the Maldives?

Yes, with a work permit that the employer applies for and pays for. Only housekeeping manager is on the list of posts being reserved for Maldivians, from December 2030.
