Front office careers in the Maldives run from receptionist at the arrival desk to front office manager, and on to running the rooms division. Some Maldives listings ask for a specific language: Russian, Chinese, German or Japanese.

1,599 vacancies are open in the Maldives on CareersMV as of 7 Oct 2026: 1,096 at 123 resorts and 398 in government and the public sector.

What front office does at a Maldives resort

Front office handles the guest from booking to departure: arrival by seaplane or speedboat, check-in, requests, excursions, bills and the trip home. On an island resort the team also books boat and seaplane transfers and tells every department who is arriving.

Resorts give the job their own names. Maldives listings for this work use titles such as guest experience host, island host, resort host, front desk agent, guest relations officer and receptionist.

The career ladder

The usual front office ladder, from entry level:

  1. Receptionist, front desk agent, guest service host or guest relations officer
  2. Senior receptionist or senior guest service agent
  3. Front office supervisor or guest relations supervisor
  4. Assistant front office manager
  5. Front office manager
  6. Rooms division manager or director of rooms

Related routes branch off: reservations agent, night auditor, butler and guest experience roles. In some resorts butlers sit in the front office department; see butler careers.

Skills and qualifications resorts ask for

No Maldives rule we checked requires a licence for front office work. Resorts hire on experience, languages and manner with guests.

What to show in your application:

  • hotel or resort front desk experience at the level you apply for
  • fluent spoken and written English
  • a second language that matches the guests
  • comfort with the hotel's reservation and billing system
  • calm handling of complaints and late arrivals
  • the ability to live on a small island in a multicultural team

For foreign managers, the work permit category depends on qualifications. A job counts as professional and managerial if it needs Maldives Qualifications Authority Level 7 or above (Regulation 2025/R-120, Article 40). Level 5 or 6 with five years' relevant experience also qualifies.

Languages that help

A second language helps in front office. Front office listings open in October 2026 asked for German, Japanese, Russian and Chinese speakers.

Those match who comes. China (14.7%), Russia (12.4%), the UK (9.0%), Germany (7.5%) and Italy (6.8%) sent the most tourists in 2025 (Ministry of Tourism).

Quotas for front office jobs are being phased out

Two front office jobs are on the list of posts being reserved for Maldivians under Regulation 2025/R-120 (Schedule 2, Article 26). The regulation took effect on 14 December 2025.

  • Guest relations officer (English): quotas end two years after the regulation took effect, from December 2027.
  • Front office manager: quotas end five years after, from December 2030.

At each deadline, existing quotas for the post are cancelled and no new ones are issued. The list was amended in December 2025 (2025/R-122), so check the current version on the Department of Foreign Labour's site.

Large resorts also face a senior management rule. In workplaces with more than 50 employees, 60% of senior management must be Maldivian (Employment Act, section 74-1). So must the most senior human resources employee.

For Maldivians, these rules open a route from front office into resort management.

Pay

Resorts rarely advertise pay, so most front office listings leave salary out. The table shows advertised pay where enough listings state it.

The median of open vacancies that advertise pay, with the lowest and highest. USD at the rate of 7 Oct 2026 (Rates By Exchange Rate API). Resorts rarely advertise pay, and service charge, accommodation and meals are not in these figures.

Resorts must also pay a service charge. Tourism businesses must charge at least 10% service charge and share it equally among all employees (Employment Act, section 52). The employer may keep no more than 1%.

Most resort staff live on the island: 91% of resort employees lived in their resort in 2022 (Maldives Bureau of Statistics). Ask what accommodation, meals and flights come with the job.

Questions people ask

How do I get a front office job in a Maldives resort?

Apply to listings with a CV that leads with front desk experience and languages. If you speak a language of a main market, such as Russian, Chinese or German, say so in the first line.

Can foreigners work as front office managers in the Maldives?

Yes, until the quota phase-out. Under Regulation 2025/R-120, quotas for front office managers end five years after 14 December 2025, and for English-speaking guest relations officers after two years.

How much do resort receptionists earn in the Maldives?

Resorts rarely advertise pay, so there is no reliable public figure; the table above shows only advertised pay. Ask about basic salary, service charge, overtime and benefits before you accept.

Is service charge paid to front office staff?

Yes. The Employment Act requires tourism businesses to share service charge equally among all employees who contribute to services, directly or indirectly.
