Maldives government jobs: Gazette vacancies, civil service ranks and pay (2026)

Civil service jobs are posted on the Government Gazette and filled on points for qualifications, experience, tests and interview. Documents, ranks, pay.

Sources checked · 10 min read

Maldives government jobs are advertised by each office on the Government Gazette. You apply to that office by its deadline, using the Civil Service Commission's application form. Candidates are scored on qualifications, experience, any test and an interview, and the scores are published.

1,599 vacancies are open in the Maldives on CareersMV as of 7 Oct 2026: 1,096 at 123 resorts and 398 in government and the public sector.

Who hires

The civil service had 31,878 employees on 30 June 2026 (Civil Service Commission). It covers ministries, state schools, hospitals, health centres and council offices.

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) sets the rules, and each office runs its own recruitment under them. That is why a school, a regional hospital and a ministry each publish their own notices.

Some state employers are outside the civil service and recruit under their own rules. The CSC's English text of the 2010 Civil Service Regulation lists them (article 7). They include the police, the military, judges and companies in which the government holds the controlling share.

How vacancies are announced

Civil service vacancies are published on the Government Gazette, under "vazeefaage furusathu" (job opportunity). Each notice, or iulaan, follows much the same layout:

  • the post title and post number (for example J-381572) and how many posts are open;
  • whether the post is permanent or temporary;
  • the rank and pay step, the workplace and the working hours;
  • the basic salary, job allowance and daily attendance allowance;
  • the main duties and the qualifications required;
  • the documents to submit and the selection criteria;
  • the deadline (sungadi) and where to apply.

Most notices are in Dhivehi. CareersMV shows Gazette vacancies in English at /jobs/government.

Deadlines are short. The notices published on 6 October 2026 that we checked closed six to nine days later. You apply in person at the office or, where the notice gives one, by email.

Documents usually asked for

Civil service notices usually ask for the same set of documents, in the same order. This list is from Gazette notices of October 2026 (Ministry of Health, Kondey School):

  1. The CSC job application form, completed (download). Notices say it is also available at the office counter.
  2. Your CV, with a phone number and email address.
  3. A readable copy of both sides of your national identity card, even if it has expired. If you have lost it, your birth certificate, passport or driving licence.
  4. If you have a service agreement with the government: a letter from your current office saying it does not object to you leaving.
  5. Copies of your certificates and transcripts. Certificates from higher-education institutions abroad must be levelled and stamped by the Maldives Qualifications Authority.
  6. Letters proving your experience, from each employer. Each letter must give the post, the dates in years, months and days, and your duties.

Experience letters from private companies must also state how many staff the workplace had. Civil service experience that does not appear on your CSC account (myaccount.csc.gov.mv) needs a letter from the office.

If a former employer has closed, the notices accept the reference check form in Annex 8 of the CSC's recruitment policy instead.

How selection works

Applicants are scored on points, and the highest scorers are shortlisted for the interview and any test. A Ministry of Health notice of 6 October 2026 says its criteria follow the CSC's 2021 recruitment standards, as amended a second time (notice).

Each notice sets its own weights. Two examples:

CriterionCSC Lead Attorney, 1 October 2026Kondey School teacher, 6 October 2026

Education above the requirement5%Not listed

Sources: CSC notice 188-HRS-IUL/2026/77 and the Kondey School notice.

The CSC's own notice says it publishes the shortlisting results within 3 working days of the deadline. It publishes the final points sheet, called the A2 sheet, within 3 working days of the interviews.

You can complain about your points within 3 working days of the sheet's publication. Check each notice for its own timetable.

The notices we checked set their tests post by post, and none refers to a general civil service entrance exam. Written tests, practicals and presentations depend on the job, so past papers for one post tell you little about another.

Civil service ranks and how pay is set

Since 1 November 2025, civil service pay has followed the State Pay Framework (President's Office). The National Pay Commission sets the framework under the State Pay Policy Act, Law No. 11/2016 (Pay Framework Standards).

Posts are grouped into job matrices, which cover Public Service Ranks 1 to 12. The job matrices give the qualifications and the pay for each rank in each job family.

Pay has three parts:

  • Basic salary: a fixed monthly amount for the post's rank in its job matrix.
  • Job allowance: a monthly amount, paid at a pay step.
  • Attendance allowance: a set amount for each day you attend work.

Notices also list a pension contribution under the Maldives Pension Act, and overtime under the framework's rules.

You move up a pay step after two consecutive years in the same post, rank and step. Each year needs an appraisal score of at least 85% and at least 90 days worked (CSC circular 70/2026).

Pay depends on the job family, not only the rank. These are the amounts in vacancy notices from October 2026, all at step 1, in MVR:

Teachers and the Ministry of Education

State school teachers hold one of five teacher ranks, which map to Public Service Ranks 5 to 10. All need a teaching licence from the Teachers Registration Board (School Teachers job matrix).

Teacher rankPublic Service RankBasic salary a month (MVR)Job allowance, steps 1 to 3 (MVR)Attendance a day (MVR)
Teacher, Rank 159,2142,764 / 3,179 / 3,59475
Teacher, Rank 2711,5645,397 / 6,207 / 7,017146
Teacher, Rank 3812,4095,791 / 6,660 / 7,529157
Teacher, Rank 4913,8226,451 / 7,419 / 8,387175
Teacher, Rank 51015,4167,194 / 8,273 / 9,352195

Rank 1 needs a teaching qualification at level 5 or 6 of the Maldives National Qualifications Framework. Rank 2 needs a bachelor's degree in education, or a bachelor's in a subject plus a level 5 teaching qualification.

Ranks 3 to 5 also need a level 9 or level 10 qualification. Most routes add years at the rank below: 4 years for Rank 3, and 6 years for Ranks 4 and 5. The pay in the table matches the Kondey School notice of 6 October 2026.

Schools advertise their own teacher posts on the Gazette, and teacher selection can include a practical. In the Kondey School notice the practical carried more points than the interview.

The Ministry of Education's HR division publishes a standard Expatriate Teachers Contract, latest version dated 27 January 2026 (downloads page). It sets:

  • a contract for the academic year, with a 3-month probation;
  • an air ticket to join and a ticket home at the end, plus an annual leave ticket after a full contract year;
  • health insurance through the employer's scheme;
  • 30 working days of annual leave after 12 months;
  • 3 months' notice, or 3 months' salary, if you resign early.

If a school hires a local teacher for the subject, it may move the foreign teacher or end the contract with a month's pay. Quotas for foreign primary and secondary teachers are due to end in December 2030 under Regulation 2025/R-120 (Schedule 2, article 26).

Nurses and the Ministry of Health

Maldivian nurses apply for civil service posts advertised on the Gazette. Clinical Nurse posts at two island health centres in September and October 2026 were Rank 9 (Feydhoo, Thoddoo). Both paid a basic salary of MVR 17,932, a job allowance of MVR 10,270 and MVR 278 a day attendance.

The Ministry of Health recruits foreign nurses and doctors through registered recruitment agencies. It publishes an English "demand letter" on the Gazette, and agencies submit candidates through an online form by the deadline.

The demand letter for 50 registered nurses on 18 August 2026 offered and required:

  • basic salary MVR 9,060 a month and a service allowance of at least MVR 120 a working day;
  • accommodation allowance MVR 3,000 and food allowance MVR 1,800 a month;
  • a bachelor's degree in nursing recognised by the Maldives Nursing and Midwifery Council;
  • at least 2 years in general nursing or midwifery, within the last 2 years, in a hospital with 150 or more beds;
  • registration with your home nursing council, and IELTS General 5.5 or OET grade C, valid for 2 years;
  • age under 35, and a police clearance certificate with at least 3 months' validity when you sign.

The Ministry pays the health insurance premium. The notice says no recruitment fees or charges apply to services provided to the Ministry, and each agency may submit at most 5 nurses.

A June 2026 call for specialist doctors offered a basic salary of MVR 30,990 and MVR 425 a working day service allowance. It added MVR 7,000 accommodation and MVR 2,400 food allowance a month.

Nurses are on the localisation list in Regulation 2025/R-120: quotas for foreign nurses are due to end in December 2028.

Can a foreigner get a civil service job?

Permanent civil service posts are for Maldivian citizens (Civil Service Regulation 2014, article 78). An office may hire a foreigner on contract when no Maldivian is available, but must replace them once a suitable Maldivian is found (article 109).

Foreign staff hired this way also need a quota and work permit, like any other foreign employee. The work permit guide explains the process.

Council offices, state companies and the police

Council office staff are civil servants, so council vacancies follow the CSC rules above (Civil Service Regulation 2014, article 32). The CSC website also carries some council vacancies, such as an Assistant Council Officer at V. Rakeedhoo on 30 September 2026 (CSC announcement).

State-owned companies, such as utilities, airlines and transport companies, also post vacancies on the Gazette. They set their own requirements, application forms and pay, so read each notice rather than assuming civil service rules.

The police and the military recruit under their own laws and run their own selection. Check each employer's own notice for the process and pay. If anything is unclear, ask the office named in the notice before the deadline.

Questions people ask

How do I apply for a government job in the Maldives?

Find the vacancy on the Government Gazette or at /jobs/government. Fill in the CSC application form. Submit it with your CV, ID copy, certificates and experience letters to the office named in the notice, before its deadline.

Is there a civil service exam in the Maldives?

Not a single national one, as far as the CSC's vacancy notices show. Each post sets its own assessment, such as a written test, a practical or a presentation, alongside an interview. The notice says what the assessment is and how many points it carries.

What are the civil service ranks in the Maldives?

Since November 2025, civil service posts have been graded by Public Service Rank under the State Pay Framework. The job matrices cover ranks 1 to 12. The job matrix for each job family sets the rank's basic salary, its job allowance steps and a daily attendance allowance.

How much do government teachers earn in the Maldives?

A Teacher Rank 1 in a state school has a basic salary of MVR 9,214 a month. On top come a job allowance from MVR 2,764 and MVR 75 for each day worked. Teacher Rank 5 has a basic salary of MVR 15,416. Foreign teachers are paid under the Ministry of Education's expatriate contract.

How do foreign nurses apply to the Ministry of Health?

Through a registered recruitment agency. The Ministry posts demand letters on the Government Gazette, and agencies submit candidates through the Ministry's online form by the deadline. You should not pay a recruitment fee for this.

Can a foreigner work for the Maldives government?

Only on contract, when no qualified Maldivian is available. Permanent civil service posts are reserved for Maldivian citizens. The Ministries of Health and Education hire foreign doctors, nurses and teachers on contracts.
