Food and beverage is the largest area of work in a Maldives resort, and waiter and bartender are two of its entry jobs. In 2022 food and beverage accounted for 33% of resort jobs, and 67% of them were held by foreign workers (Maldives Bureau of Statistics).

1,599 vacancies are open in the Maldives on CareersMV as of 7 Oct 2026: 1,096 at 123 resorts and 398 in government and the public sector.

What waiters and bartenders do at a Maldives resort

A resort waiter serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in the resort's restaurants, and may also cover in-villa dining, beach dinners and pool service. A bartender runs a bar shift: cocktails, wine and soft drinks, stock, and charging drinks to guests' villas.

Guests stay on one island for their whole holiday, so the same team serves them every day and remembering names and preferences pays off.

Maldives listings for this work use titles such as waiter, F&B attendant, bartender, barman and barista. Some combine roles, such as bartender and waiter.

The career ladder

The restaurant ladder, from entry level:

  1. Waiter or F&B attendant
  2. Captain or head waiter
  3. Restaurant supervisor
  4. Assistant restaurant manager
  5. Restaurant manager
  6. Assistant F&B manager
  7. F&B manager or director of food and beverage

The bar ladder, from entry level:

  1. Bar attendant or barback
  2. Bartender
  3. Head bartender (head barman)
  4. Bar supervisor or bar manager

The wine route runs from commis sommelier to sommelier and head sommelier. Each route can lead to F&B manager.

What resorts ask for

No Maldives rule we checked requires a qualification to work as a waiter or bartender. The listings we read hired on experience, English and presentation.

A waiter listing we read in October 2026 asked for:

  • at least a year in a similar role at a luxury resort
  • fluent written and spoken English
  • strong knowledge of the point of sale (POS) system
  • a well-groomed appearance
  • experience across several food and beverage outlets, as a plus

Another, for a waiter or bartender, asked for practical experience, adaptability to island life and Russian.

WSET levels for wine and bar work

WSET is an international body that awards drinks qualifications. The Wine & Spirit Education Trust, a registered charity based in London, offers them at four levels (WSET):

  • Level 1: Award in Wines, Spirits, Sake or Beer
  • Level 2: Award in Wines, Spirits, Sake or Beer
  • Level 3: Award in Wines, Spirits or Sake
  • Level 4: Diploma in Wines

For a bartender, Level 2 in Spirits shows product knowledge; for a sommelier route, the wine levels are the path. No listing we read made WSET a requirement, so treat it as an advantage.

Languages that help

Languages help in guest-facing roles; one resort in October 2026 advertised a waiter job for a Russian speaker. China (14.7%), Russia (12.4%), the UK (9.0%), Germany (7.5%) and Italy (6.8%) sent the most tourists in 2025 (Ministry of Tourism).

Pay

Resorts rarely advertise pay, so most waiter and bartender listings leave salary out. The table shows advertised pay where enough listings state it.

Advertised pay, MVR a month

Too few open vacancies advertise pay for these roles right now. See advertised salaries.

The median of open vacancies that advertise pay, with the lowest and highest. USD at the rate of 7 Oct 2026 (Rates By Exchange Rate API). Resorts rarely advertise pay, and service charge, accommodation and meals are not in these figures.

Service charge comes on top of salary. Tourism businesses must charge at least 10% service charge and share it equally among all employees (Employment Act, section 52). The employer may keep no more than 1%.

The Labour Relations Authority says this covers resorts, hotels, guesthouses and tourist vessels.

The service charge is shared among all staff, not only the people who served the guest. It is paid monthly, for the previous month.

Coming from abroad

If you are not Maldivian, the resort applies and pays for your work permit (Regulation 2025/R-120, Article 77). It must also arrange your accommodation (Article 60). Waiter and bartender are not on the list of jobs being reserved for Maldivians.

Questions people ask

How much do waiters earn in Maldives resorts?

Resorts rarely advertise pay, so there is no reliable public figure; the table above shows only advertised pay. Service charge is paid on top of salary at tourism businesses. Ask for both, in writing, before you accept.

Is service charge mandatory in the Maldives?

Yes, for tourism businesses. The Employment Act requires at least 10% service charge on all services, shared equally among all employees. The employer may keep no more than 1%.

Do I need WSET to be a bartender in the Maldives?

No listing we read required it. A WSET award shows drinks knowledge and helps for bar and sommelier roles; experience in a similar role is what listings ask for.

How do I apply for a waiter job in a Maldives resort?

Send a CV and cover letter to the email in the listing, leading with resort or hotel restaurant experience. Some resorts ask for a photo; follow each listing's instructions.
