It holds official state documents, photographs, audio-visual material and maps, and it develops archiving and public records management policy. Its headquarters are in Malé, and it runs a digital archive platform for public access to its collections. It has been placed under several ministries since its creation, and is currently overseen by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts.
